Description

L’Artigiano Scarperia “BIRRITEDDA HISTORIC KNIFE” Buffalo Horn Friction Custom

The Biritedda historical knife has a brushed steel blade with a very unusual shape; the straight edge ends abruptly in a very thin and sharp point; when opened it abuts a rivet attached to the back of the handle and there is no spring. The one-piece handle is made of fine buffalo horn and decorated with brass fittings.

It is a typical Sicilian knife that was probably made in the Canicattì area. It owes its name to the shape of the blade, which is rounded at the highest point of the rib and resembles the shape of a cap, or birritedda in Sicilian. This ancient knife was already in use at the beginning of the 19th century in the Agrigento area and was used by wealthy families to peel artichokes to avoid pricking themselves on the tips of the leaves.
