In 1986-87, I designed the ATCF, drawing inspiration from my experiences with military and security personnel in both Central America and the United States. My goal was to create a unique knife: lightweight yet rugged, easily accessible and comfortable to carry on a variety of clothing, completely corrosion resistant, with ambidextrous functionality for opening and closing, and operable with one hand.
The ATCF was a breakthrough in tactical knives because it was the first to be fully assembled with screws instead of pins and rivets. I introduced the thumb disk to make it easier to open with both hands, an innovation that was imitated by many knife manufacturers around the world.
Special features of the ATCF include the knurling on the top of the blade that matches the finger guard at the base of the handle when the knife is closed, providing protection and a secure grip during use. In addition, the ATCF was the first pocket knife with a pocket clip that allows versatile access in different body positions.
The ATCF has had a profound impact on the knife world and has become one of the most imitated models. As I like to say: ‘The ATCF is the classic shape that shaped an entire industry!”
